Cuncolim witnessed uproar on Sunday after vendors protested over the disconnection of water supply to the market by the PWD over non-payment of bill amounting to Rs 2.5 lakh.
Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson Landry Mascarenhas said the CMC could not make the prompt payment to the PWD necessitating the disconnection for want of a full-fledged accountant. The Chairperson, however, has promised to issue the cheque to the PWD, water supply so that water supply is restored in the market at the earliest.
The toilets and water taps in the Cuncolim market, housing the fish, fruit and vegetable vendors were found locked for want of water supply. Irate vendors protested over the water disconnection by the PWD, demanding to know how they are to survive without water.
The vendors pointed out that they pay the sopo fees to the contractor every day without fail, questioning the failure of the civic body to provide water facilities in the market.
Chairperson Mascarenhas, who made his presence felt at the market, pointed out that the pending bill could not be cleared for want of a full-fledged accountant. “The payment of water supply bill amounting to Rs 2.5 lakh will be made to the PWD by Monday.”
