Benaulim villagers on Tuesday strongly objected to filling of land along the roadside at Pedda.
Angry locals called up members of the Benaulim panchayat as well as local MLA Churchill Alemao to intervene and stop the filling activity.
A local resident Seby Fernandes took strong exception to the activity, pointing out that while the locals have been working to save the environment, unscrupulous elements are out to destroy it.
He feared that the filling may cause flooding and inundation of the low-lying areas around Pedda-Benaulim during the monsoons.
Though the locals could not identify the persons involved in the illegal activity, they suspect that a Margao councillor was spotted near the site.
The Colva police sent its personnel to take stock of the situation and stop the activity.
