VALPOI
Responding to directives from Health Minister Vishwajeet Rane, officials at the Valpoi Community Health Centre (CHC) have begun fumigation operations in all schools and colleges in its jurisdiction to prevent vector-borne diseases.
CHC Valpoi Health officer Dr Gajanan Naik said the fumigation operations were conducted after instructions by Health Minister Vishwajit Rane to fumigate schools and colleges in the State, in view of many dengue and malaria cases.
“As soon as we received an order from the director of health services, we began fumigation in and around those schools and colleges which fall within the jurisdiction of CHC.”
“Till date, we have covered 29 schools, which also includes aganwadis, while the remaining five schools will be covered within the next few days,” said Dr Naik.
“Although no positive cases have been reported in our area, this is a preventive measures taken by the health department in Valpoi.”
Dr Naik also stated that besides fumigation operations, awareness programmes are being conducted in the area to prevent mosquito breeding sites.
Dr Naik appealed to people to identify and destroy mosquito breeding sites.
“Since mosquitoes mainly breed in stagnant water, source reduction can be as simple as emptying water from containers around the home.”
“Mosquito breeding sites can be eliminated at home by emptying old tires, buckets or other water-filled containers regularly. Eliminating such mosquito breeding areas can be an extremely effective and a good way to reduce mosquito population without resorting to insecticides,” Dr Naik added.
