PANAJI: The New Fish Market in Vasco will get an upgraded drainage system, with Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar announcing that new German materials will be used to improve water drainage and hygiene at the facility.
On Friday, Salkar, along with Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Girish Borker and officials of GSUDA, inspected the market and appealed to fish vendors to stop using cardboard and wooden planks as makeshift shelves.
"During the construction of the new market, we consulted the vendors and sought their approval for the platform design. They agreed at the time. Now they are saying the platforms are too small, which has led them to use cardboard and wooden planks to display fish. As a result, the water does not drain properly," Salkar said.
The MLA said the drainage system would be upgraded using advanced German materials to improve water flow and maintain cleanliness inside the market.
Chairperson Girish Borker urged vendors to involve their representatives in discussions before the final phase of the work begins. He also alleged that the opposition was misleading fish vendors and creating unnecessary controversy over what he described as a state-of-the-art market.
