Fishing community leaders including Goenchya Ramponkarancho Ekvott secretary Olencio Simoes , Custodio Dsouza and Adv Fr Michael Fernandes met the chief officer of the Mormugao Municipal Council ( MMC ) on Wednesday to sign a MoU before the Vasco fish market vendors could be shifted to a temporary location.
Speaking to media Vasco market vendors leader Adv Fr Michael Fernandes said that they had arrived for discussion on the new market.
"We will sign a MOU and also discuss on how the market will be, when it will be completed, what facilities will be made available and what will be the rights of the fish vendors inside the market. We have come for a final meeting with the MMC to discuss the other issues of water supply, toilet facilities and having a rest room.
"We also want to tell the MMC that we need security at the new temporary location that we will shift to and we will come to a final conclusion on the issue of the Vasco fish market. Since all our demands are met by MLA Krishna Salkar and the MMC, we are handing them the market and the land in our possession to take up the building of the new Vasco fishing market complex ," said Fr Fernandes.
Speaking to media GRE secretary Olencio Simoes said that Vasco fish vendors were happy that their long pending demands were met.
" Fish market President Carridade Pereira sadly expired recently and could not see this day. Finally the MMC and MLA has agreed to our demands and we are signing a MOU which clearly states that the market should be completed within 18 months and the market should have all facilities for cold storage while also tackling the sewage and garbage issues. We thank the MLA Krishna Salkar and MMC for taking up the initiative to build the new fish market by agreeing to all our demands . We also request the local MLA Krishna Salkar to also take up the issue of regularisation of our houses," said Simoes.
Speaking to media Custodio Dsouza said that Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar had earlier met the fish vendors for taking up the issue of Vasco fish market.
"Our demand was that the market has to be built as per the needs of the vendors but these demands were not met all these years. Finally Salkar and the MMC Chief Officer came together and our demands were met and we have now decided to meet the Chief Officer to finalise the next steps toward the new Vasco fish market. We also request MLA Salkar to get branches of the trees in the temporary premises trimmed before monsoons and make arrangements for the vendors at the temporary shed," said D'Souza.
