Several residents of Vaddem along with parishioners of St Andrew’s Church, Vasco, on Saturday took the initiative to clean the Vaddem lake.
Speaking to reporters, Parish Priest of St Andrews Church Fr Gabriel Coutinho said they had received complaints regarding the moss and algae accumulation in the lake.
Fr Coutinho also said the Vaddem Lake belonged to the St Andrew’s Church and necessary steps were being taken to take care of the lake.
"On Saturday, we took the initiative to clean up the Vaddem Lake for the benefit of all students and people who come here for their daily walk, besides keeping in mind the need to have a clean environment as there was stench emanating from the lake in the last few days.”
Savio Messias, attorney of Fabrica da Igreja de Vasco da Gama, said the Fabrica were owners of the lake but the government was trying to take over possession of the lake.
"We have, however, challenged the government’s attempt in court and the matter is coming up for hearing soon. We are confident of winning the case and we will ensure that the lake is cleaned regularly, well-maintained and utilised by everybody.”
“Since the beautification two years ago, the government has done nothing at the lake, the Fabrica and parishioners have been cleaning, repairing and maintaining the lake," said Messias.
