The Goa Police truck (GA-07-G-0232) is presently being used to transport signboards and potable road dividers, but the precarious condition of the vehicle has left police personnel deployed to operate the truck apprehensive about their safety.
The cabin is rickety and shakes while the truck is in motion, while the windscreen has detached from the frame and a lone wiper seems to be holding the wind screen from falling off.
“It is risky to operate the truck as there is no guarantee when the windscreen will fall on the occupants while the vehicle is in motion,” said a source at the Vasco Traffic Cell.
“The tempo is almost 12 years old and very little maintenance has been carried out during these years,” said the source.
When efforts were made to contact Vasco Traffic Cell PI Roy Pereira, staff at the Vasco Traffic Cell informed that PI Pereira was in Panaji to attend an official meeting.
When brought to their notice about the precarious condition of the police truck, the staff said the vehicle was due for repair and would be sent to the company workshop to replace the cabin.
“We have to use the vehicle in times of emergency, as there is no other alternate vehicle to transport the road dividers,” said a staff employee on condition of anonymity.
When asked to comment on the condition of the police truck at the Vasco Traffic Cell, Vasco Assistant Director of Transport Abhay Naik said the transport department cannot initiate any action if the vehicle is stationary.
“If, however, the vehicle is found on the road, we will book the vehicle,” he said.
