Two organisations in Vasco have hit out at the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) for the rising stray cattle menace in the port town.
Claiming that a lot of accidents have been reported due to stray cattle on the roads, the organisations have accused MMC of failing to stake strict action against the stray cattle owners, to deter them from letting their cattle on the roads.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Niz Goenkar Revolutionary Front Spokesperson Chandrashekar Vasta said the new elected MMC Chairperson Bhavna Nanoskar must act on stray cattle menace.
“The former MMC chairperson had assured to act in the matter. Today, stray cattle are found on all roads and many accidents have been reported on a daily basis because of the stray cattle. The Mormugao Municipal Council must act before a life is lost due to a fatal accident caused by stray cattle. Stray cattle owners must be arrested and strict measures must be taken,” said Vasta.
Mormugao Yuva Morcha (MYM) Convenor Kiran Naik said it was the duty of all cattle owners to ensure that their cattle are confined to a cowshed.
“If the MMC is unable to handle the stray cattle menace, they can outsource the work to a Goushala,”said Naik.
“I have met the MMC chief officer on many occasions and have requested him to allot MYM a space and we will take responsibility of all the menace caused by any stray cattle across the taluka. We are willing to give
in writing that MYM will manage the stray cattle menace, provided MMC gives us suitable land for the project,” said Naik.
