Vegetable & fruit supply resumes, but falls short

PANAJI

The vegetable and fruit supply from the Belgaum wholesale market has resumed in the state, however, the supply is slightly less due to restricted timing of trade at the wholesale market.

"The supply of fruits and vegetables has started. We are getting the supply in time," said a vegetable vendor in Panaji.

The vendor, however, said that the supply is not smooth as earlier.

"The supply can be undertaken only before 10 am from Belgaum wholesale market. Due to these restrictions, the supply of vegetables and fruits have been slightly uneven and less in quantity," complained the vendor.

Fortunately, the rates of vegetables and fruits have not been hiked.

The Karnataka government has imposed a lockdown from the last fortnight. District authorities had shifted the wholesale vegetable market from the APMC market yard and divided it into two places on the outskirts of Belagavi. The Belgaum wholesale market was shut earlier for two days “ on Sunday and Monday. The situation has improved in the last two days now the supply has come close to normal.

But still, the timing of trading is affecting the trade. Timings of wholesale trading and supplies were restricted to four hours from 6 am to 10 am. This timing is insufficient to receive vegetables and pack them, due to which farmers are also reluctant to bring their yield to the market.
