The Veling-Priol-Kuncoliem Panchayat in its last gram sabha, while referring to the issue of controversial developed plots along the bypass road at Kuncoliem, had resolved to bar the builders’ lobby from entering their area.
The panchayat had also decided to stage a ‘dharna’ in front of government offices to protest against failure of authorities to take action on their grievances.
They staged the ‘dharna’ under the banner of Veling-Priol-Kuncoliem Nagrik Kruti Samiti and condemned the act of the government.
The 11 panchas, including Sarpanch Damodar Naik and Adv Raju Mangueshkar, along with 100-odd locals staged a ‘dharna’ and met Deputy Collector, Mamlatdar and Block Development Officer to know what action has been initiated against the developer.
Addressing the gathering at the administrative building for almost 40 minutes, Adv Mangueshkar alleged that the government has done nothing to save the hills, which are being destroyed by developers.
A delegation of five members was allowed to meet Deputy Collector Fernandes, who said he has initiated action as per the law in force.
Sarpanch Damodar Naik had said the panchayat has no powers to issue a stop-work order to the developer, but Fernandes corrected him saying that whenever any sort of construction takes place in the village and if the person concerned fails to obtain provisional NOC, then the local body has a right to serve a stop-work order.
When the agitators claimed that trees on the hill are being cut to develop the area, Fernandes said it was duty of the forest department to take action.
Speaking to The Goan, Govind Gaude, who contested last assembly election from Priol, said: “Salute the daring action by the elected members of the panchayat. They stood with the villagers against the illegal activities to protect the environment and its identity. This is a classic example set by these panchas for elected representatives.” Sarpanch Naik told The Goan that nobody had come forward to claim the land. “Hence, today we demolished the gates constructed at the entry point of these plots and also damaged the road.”
He said notices will be issued to the developer for failing to take permissions to construct roads.
When contacted, the developer of the area Gopal Naik said he was not aware that the structure was demolished. “I don’t know if they have demolished it,” he said.
When asked if he will lodge a police complaint against the agitators, he said: “Let them do whatever they want. I will not complain.”
