Barbosa, around 45 years from Kanttem in Velsao Pale, had a lucky escape after a tree came crashing on her house in the wee hours of October 8. She had escaped unhurt despite the tree crashing on the roof of her bedroom and damaging the house to a great extent.
With no access roads to cater emergency services like fire brigade and ambulance, neighbours had rushed to the site for help and Velsao Pale Issorcim Sarpanch Henriques P D'Mello along with Deputy Sarpanch D'Souza, who is a local panch, had assured all help to Barbosa.
Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha, who had also visited Barbosa's house, had assured financial assistance through the CM's Relief Fund.
Saldanha immediately made an letter to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar seeking immediate help under the CM's Relief Fund, the panchayat also decided to offer some monetary help to Barbosa. Ward Panch and Deputy Sarpanch D'Souza had immediately helped Barbosa with some monetary help in her personal capacity on the same day to clear the tree by engaging labourers and she also requested the talathi to follow up the matter.
When contacted, D'Souza said Barbosa suffered losses of about Rs 20,000. "The Talathi immediately conducted panchanama and estimated a loss of Rs 20,000 and forwarded the file to the Collector's office Margao. The panchayat handed her a cheque to offer quick monetary help till she gets further compensation," said D'Souza.
When contacted, Cortalim MLA Saldanha said she has already placed Barbosa's case before the chief minister for CM's Relief Fund.
"I had visited the house immediately after hearing the news and I assured her of providing financial assistance thorough CM's Relief Fund. I wrote to the CM along with her application and we have placed her case before the CM for CM's Relief Fund," said Saldanha.
