Vendors outside GMC receive eviction notice

PANAJI

Government authorities have served a notice to around 40-odd vendors operating outside the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim asking them to vacate the place within two days.

The area in which the vendors are undertaking their business activities belongs to the government. Vendors have erected kiosks and structures on the land without any permission from the competent authority. The area in contention is situated in front of GMC and is sensitive.

However, the vendors have refused to move out of the area and have threatened to go on a hunger strike if any action is initiated.

The vendors say that they have been conducting business there since 1993 and have refused to budge.

It may be recalled that the order for eviction was issued by Deputy Collector Tiswadi) in 2018, but after many politicians supported the vendors, the implementation was halted.

Civil Supplies Minister Govind Gaude, St Andre MLA Francis Silveira and St Cruz MLA Tony Fernandes intervened, and the issue was kept on hold.

However, now once again, the authorities have served the notice urging the vendors to vacate the place.
