Veterinary facility for animal birth control to come up at Usgao

PANAJI:  The Goa cabinet on Wednesday approved the setting up of an ultra-modern animal birth control veterinary facility and a training centre at Usgao.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who addressed the media after the meeting, said some 18,730 square metres of land at Usgao will be allotted to the ‘Worldwide Veterinary Services’ to set up the “world-class” facility.

The land is already in the possession of the Animal Husbandry Department and bears survey number 305 of Usgao in Ponda taluka.

The decision gains significance in the backdrop of a recent Supreme Court verdict related to the stray dog menace and several incidents of dogs attacking humans in the State.

Following the verdict, the Goa government had also constituted a three-member task force to prepare an action plan for rehabilitating stray dogs in shelter homes. The panel is headed by AHVS Deputy Director Nitin Naik, with Assistant Director of the Veterinary Hospital, Sonsodo, Atanazia Fernandes, representing South Goa, and Assistant Director of the Government Poultry Farm, Ela, Charlette Fernandes, representing North Goa, as members.
