BELAGAVI: The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has called for a Bandh in Karnataka on Friday, even as the state is reeling under tension after the Kodagu violence that rocked the state on Tuesday, in which a VHP activist was killed.
The Bandh call was given following escalating tension in the state over the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan.
However, Karnataka government in a press release has stated that stringent preventive measures will be initiated to control untoward violence that may be caused due to the Bandh.
It may be recalled that tension prevailed in Karnataka after VHP activist D S Kuttappa was killed during the birth anniversary celebrations of Tipu Sultan, which led to a violent clash between two groups. The clashes broke out between VHP activists and a Muslim group, following which the police had to resort to lathi-charge to control the situation.
Amid confusion that prevailed over the death of the VHP activist, post-mortem reports have confirmed that Kuttappa died of a bullet injury in head, while according to VHP sources claimed that the activist succumbed to injuries he suffered during the stone-pelting amid the clash.
Kodagu SP Vartika Katiyar on Wednesday stated that Kutappa fell off a 20-feet wall and sustained head injuries, leading to his death.
Karnataka government has handed over a cheque of Rs 5 lakh to the family members of Kuttappa.
Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Dinesh Gundurao on Thursday visited the family and gave the cheque. The minister also urged leaders not to politicize the issue.

BELAGAVI: Jnanpith Award winner Girish Karnad has received a threat on twitter for his 'provocative' remark on renaming the Bengaluru international airport from Kempe Gowda to Tipu Sultan.
While a police complaint was filed against Karnad at a local police station in Bengaluru, the government has provided additional security to the prolific Kannada writer and actor, who had also expressed an unconditional apology on Wednesday while withdrawing his statement.
