After the deluge, now there is a flood of VIP visits to the affected villages in Bardez and a host of promises to boot.

If Revenue Minister Jennifer Monserrate with North Goa Collector R Meneka in tow visited the villages on Tuesday, it was the turn of Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant Kavlekar to descend and interact with the distressed locals in Bardez on Wednesday.

And the deputy chief minister did not disappoint the gathering of locals, making the right kind of noise.

“I have asked the director, deputy director and all officials concerned to provide us a report of the damage by August 16. This is a natural disaster and the government will give full support to the farmers who have suffered losses on account of the floods,” said Kavlekar, who is also the agriculture minister.

“If the farmers are not helped in their hour of need, then all the talk of giving boost to agriculture in the State will be of no use,” he added.

He said besides Tivim, he will also visit Pernem and Bicholim constituencies to get the sense of people there.

The Deputy CM also said that the government would do its best to provide financial help to the affected at the earliest.

“We want people to get compensated as early as possible. It so happens we get field reports but financial help takes a lot of time to reach to the people,” he said.

Many local farmers told the media that all their efforts in the fields have washed away with the flood waters.

“Some of us physically sowed seeds and quite a few had also used machines to sow but the floods have destroyed all our hard work. We only hope that someone will provide us some financial support,” a farmer appealed.
