Viresh tightens grip on RGP, disciplinary panel tries to resolve crisis

PANAJI

St Andre MLA Viresh Borkar has tightened his hold over the Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP), persuading 10 founder members to withdraw criminal complaints against past functionaries and urging them to resolve the disputes through internal processes.

On Sunday, the group formally withdrew its case against former general secretary Vishwesh Naik, ending proceedings. The issues raised will now be examined by the three-member disciplinary committee appointed by Borkar, in line with the party constitution.

The disciplinary panel, meanwhile, has already begun hearings into the matter involving the 10 members suspended by the previous leadership.

Borkar, who recently assumed the role of “National President”, had revoked those suspensions soon after taking charge.

The RGP has been in turmoil for months, losing two top leaders -- founder president Manoj Parab and Naik -- to resignations.

With assembly elections just about six months away, Borkar’s consolidation of authority marks a decisive shift in the party’s internal battle.

The party’s lone legislator in the 40-member Goa Assembly, Borkar has positioned himself as the central figure in efforts to restore internal order. Whether his disciplinary panel can heal divisions remains a key question for the RGP as it heads into the crucial electoral cycle of 2027.
