Margao Municipal Council’s ‘Back to the Streets’ carnival festivities  will kick off from Saturday with the Big Fat Fatorda Carnival Blast 2019  at the Opinion Poll Square near the Ravindra Bhavan.

While the ‘Back  to the Streets’ festivities will be hosted at the Opinion Poll Square in  association with the We for Fatorda, the much awaited traditional float  parade will be held in the commercial capital as usual on Sunday.

The  highlight of the festivities will be the food court offering  international cuisine by starred resorts. Introduced last year,  around 12 starred resorts are participating in the Carnival festivities  this year, with Margao Municipal Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai saying  the people of Margao and Fatorda, besides Salcete in general can enjoy  the five-star cuisine at reasonable rates.

Addressing the media, the  MMC chairperson said this year’s Margao Carnival Committee will be  headed by Russel Miranda as president and Anson Fernandes as secretary.

Exuding  confidence that the committee headed by Russel will do justice to the  job despite the time constraints, Babita said all out efforts will be made to  showcase before the people an authentic and festive carnival. She  pointed out that while the Opinion Poll Square will play host to the  carnival festivities, the traditional carnival folk plays will be staged  in all the 25 municipal wards in the next four days.

Russel Miranda pointed out that carnival festivities will be hosted along the Opinion  Poll road on all four days, beginning from Saturday and that the five-star cuisine will be an added  attraction.

To a question in the wake  of a statement made by Tourism Minister Babu Ajgaonkar that there’s a  ban on alcohol consumption in public places, Russel said the organisers  have applied for excise permission for sale of liquor at the Carnival  festivities, exuding confidence of securing the permission.

He said  that the Opinion Poll Square road from PDA market to the Ravindra Bhavan  will remain closed in the evenings on all four days of the carnival  festivities.
