Negotiations by Valpoi Municipal Council (VMC) with its agitating labour force enabled the municipality to be better prepared for the monsoons this year.
“We did not face any labour shortage problem while getting these pre-monsoon works done, as we had faced in previous years. But unfortunately this year, VMC has suffered a lot due to acute shortage of funds,” said Valpoi Municipal Council (VMC) Chairperson Sharafat Khan, while speaking to The Goan.
“We may have enough labourers at VMC, but we do not have enough money to undertake many works. The labourers recently revolted and demanded increment in their salaries, but we could not meet their demand due to shortage of funds,” said Khan.
“The matter was finally settled without paying the increment in salary. Fortunately for VMC, the labourers agreed to get back to work again,” he added.
