VMC now backed by BJP

For the first time, the Valpoi Municipal Council (VMC) will be backed by the BJP, as Parvin Sheikh was on Thursday elected unopposed as chairperson of VMC.

The post had fallen vacant after former chairperson Ramdas Shirodkar resigned.   
In the meeting convened to elect the new chairperson, Parvin Sheikh was elected unopposed as her’s was the only nomination filed. 
The Presiding Officer was Shripad Arlekar. 
 This is for the first time that VMC will be backed by the BJP, after former MLA Viswajeet Rane quit the Congress party to join the BJP. The entire council is backing Rane in Valpoi, informed sources.   
Earlier, the municipal council had eight councillors backed by Congress, while two were backed by BJP.   
Speaking to reporters, Shiekh said no compromise would be made on the development works in the municipal council jurisdiction.   
“Former chairperson Ramdas Shirodkar had undertaken many works and the pending works will be completed with the support of minister Rane,” she added.
