The work on the new market complex of Goa Housing Board (GHB) near Hanuman temple at Porvorim has virtually come to a standstill reportedly due to the Board’s non-settlement of dues of the contractor.
When The Goan visited the site of the new market complex on Tuesday morning, it was observed that work has come to a complete standstill.
Upon inquiry, it was revealed that the contractor has stopped the work as he has not paid his dues by GHB.
It has been learnt through reliable sources that an amount of nearly Rs 2 crore is due to the contractor in respect of the work undertaken.
When Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte visited the site of the market complex along with Housing Board Minister Jayesh Salgaonkar in April, this year, the Porvorim MLA was assured that the playground would be ready by May 15, and the market project within the next 6 months; however, GHB has failed to honour its commitment in respect of the playground.
Meanwhile, Goa Housing Board has issued notices to the shopkeepers in the old market opposite Central Bank of India to vacate their shops, failing which GHB will not be responsible if any untoward incident occurs during the rains. GHB has also cautioned the general public to keep away from the building.
When contacted, Salgaonkar admitted that GHB is yet to settle the bills of the contractor. “These dues are of the previous government. The State government has allotted Rs 100 crore to GHB, but the funds are yet to come. Once this happens, all the dues of the contractor will be cleared,” he said.
“The contractor has not stopped work. It is underway and I will ensure that the market project is completed soon. Revenue Minister Khaunte wants the project completed as soon as possible.”
With regard to notices issued to the shopkeepers in the old market, Salgaonkar said they had issued similar notices to the shopkeepers last year as well. “The condition of the old market has turned pathetic and as a precautionary measure, GHB has taken this step,” said Salgaonkar.
