Youth leader and social worker Warren Alemao on Tuesday met the Superintendent of Police, South Goa, and submitted a memorandum seeking a fair, impartial and evidence-based investigation into the recent Cavelossim trespass and theft case.
The memorandum raises concerns over the registration and investigation of the case following allegations of unlawful assembly, trespass, property damage, theft, threats and use of abusive language at Cavelossim.
Alemao urged the police to examine all available evidence and ensure that every person who was present or involved in the incident is treated equally under the law, irrespective of political affiliation or position.
The memorandum specifically seeks verification of concerns raised by local residents regarding the alleged presence and involvement of Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas and persons associated with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Alemao has requested the police to establish whether their alleged roles, if any, have been properly examined as part of the investigation.
He has also raised concerns regarding four local residents whose names have been mentioned in connection with the case. Alemao said the villagers are taxi drivers and daily-wage workers and that criminal proceedings could have serious consequences for their livelihoods and families.
The memorandum calls for a detailed examination of CCTV footage and other video recordings from the location, photographs, mobile-phone recordings and other digital evidence. It also seeks verification of the presence and individual roles of persons allegedly present at the site, as well as the circumstances under which certain names were included or omitted from the FIR and investigation.
“My request is simple — let the investigation be based on evidence and let the law be equal for everyone. If anyone has committed an offence, the law should take its course. But if an innocent villager has been wrongly implicated, his livelihood and reputation should not be destroyed,” Alemao said.
He appealed to the police authorities to conduct the investigation without political pressure or influence and ensure that the concerns of ordinary villagers are heard.
Alemao said his intervention was aimed at safeguarding the interests of the affected villagers and ensuring transparency, fairness and equal treatment before the law. He called for all aspects of the case to be examined on the basis of evidence before responsibility is established.
