Mystery shrouds the accumulation of water in the Margao Subway, that is posing a health hazard to the student community. Questions are being raised in many quarters whether the water finding its way into the subway is from a damaged sewage line, a chamber, a spring water source or waste stored in nearby tanks.

The city hasn’t been lashed by showers for over a month now, but the continuous presence of water inside the subway has finally woken up the government officials to study the unusual situation in the road under bridge, which is just metres away from the Comba level crossing.

Inspection of the subway by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat with officials of various government agencies to check the status of the subway could not pinpoint the source of the water that is continuously flowing into the subway. The team also checked the adjoining area, only to find storage tanks in the vicinity. However, the inspection could not exactly ascertain the source of the water flowing into the subway day in and out.

Kamat told The Goan after the inspection that officials will check the storage tanks for any leakage from the tanks that is leading to water being accumulated in the subway. He, however, did not rule out the possibility of the sewage water flowing into the subway, saying that the exact cause behind the water accumulation will be known after the detailed inspection by the officials.

“As of now, we cannot rule out anything, whether the water accumulation is due to leakage from the tanks or the underground sewage. The officials will be on the job in the next two days to ascertain the exact situation,” he said.

When The Goan drew his attention to the shabby state of affairs of the subway, Kamat said the agencies concerned will be on the job to clean up the entire area, illuminate the subway and white-wash the structure.

The Goan had a month ago highlighted how the subway – which is being used by the student community to cross over to the educational hub when the railway crossing is closed for traffic --- has been craving for attention, with the authorities turning a blind eye to the ground reality, including water accumulation inside the structure.
