A pit dug by a contractor to construct an Anganwadi building next to the government primary school at Ravana in Keri-Sattari has posed a great danger to the children.
The large pit does not have any protective fence and to make matters worse, it is filled with rainwater and this has added to the risk of a mishap involving young schoolchildren.
According to sources, an Anganwadi building is being constructed next to the Government Primary School at Ravana and the contractor began the work last month.
As part of the construction work, a huge pit of about one-and-half metres deep has been excavated and it has now been accumulated with rainwater due to heavy rains in the area.
Parents and staff of the government primary school are upset as the water-filled pit poses a grave danger to students at the school.
“This work poses a great danger to schoolchildren,” said Renuka Gawas, President of the Parent Teacher Association, while expressing displeasure over the overall work of the contractor.
Two parents, Hanumant Gawas and Damodar Shetkar said authorities should pay special attention to this danger and ensure that the contractor does not neglect this threat.
Primary school teacher, Gautami Shetgaonkar, feared there is a possibility of a major accident if children happen to go close to the pit.
Sources said the contractor had been asked to erect a protective fence around the construction site to prevent any mishap or tragedy from taking place, but there has been no action so far.
