Chief Minister Pramod Sawant told the Goa Legislative Assembly that the government was aware that some schools were taking “donations” for infrastructure development in spite of the government providing maintenance grants and loans to various schools in the State for infrastructure.
Sawant also said that the government was paying grant-in-aid to all schools to pay salaries of teachers and the other staff, a practice which was followed only in Goa.
“Some aided schools take donations, maybe, for infrastructure development…But what support we have to give, we have given to them,” Sawant said.
“We give maintenance grants to schools to maintain the school buildings. Telephone and electricity bills are also paid by the government. We also give loans at zero percent interest rate to schools that have completed 100 years,” he added.
He further informed that buses (Bal Raths) have also been provided to all schools including the aided ones.
“That is possibly one of the reasons why some government schools have shut down,” the CM observed.
