Several laterite quarries operating in Pissurlem lack fencing and rainwater filling these large pits have posed a serious threat to people and livestock.
According to locals, there are about 15 stone quarries in Pissurlem and they have complained that the Pissurlem panchayat ignored concerns about safety around these quarries.
“Due to accumulation of rainwater, these pits are becoming dangerous for people and animals. A few days ago, two cattle fell into one of these large pits and died. Two years ago, a woman also died after accidentally falling into an open pit which was filled with water,” said a resident.
“It is very important to build a fence around these pits to prevent people and animals from accidentally falling into these pits. However, there are no fences around any of the pits in the Pissurlem,” the resident stated.
Residents said the issue has been frequently raised at Gram Sabhas in Pissurlem and it has also been highlighted in the media.
One resident said children of some family members working at these stone quarries have even been seen going to bathe in these pits.
“A tragedy can easily take place at any of these quarries. The Pissurlem panchayat and other authorities must stake serious note of this and ensure the construction of fences to prevent loss of life.”
