Weak start for winter season in State so far

Despite experiencing foggy mornings, the winter season in Goa has yet to fully set in.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa has attributed this to weaker northern winds from Jammu and Kashmir and a lack of intensity in western disturbances originating from Pakistan, which usually travel towards Jammu and Rajasthan before affecting other parts of India.

“Goa usually sees the peak winter season by the second or third week of December. Currently, the northern winds are inactive and the western disturbances lack strength,” IMD official Nahush Kulkarni said.

However, fog has been reported, which Kulkarni attributes to the presence of moisture in the air. “Due to the surplus rainfall we received, moisture remains in the atmosphere. This is causing fog in the mornings, particularly in the Ghats. Certain places also report fog in the evenings,” he said, advising motorists to exercise caution.

According to the IMD report, Goa can expect partly cloudy skies and shallow fog or haze in the mornings and evenings over the next two days, with the weather likely to be dry until November 11.

Kulkarni added that while temperatures may mildly fluctuate, no significant changes are anticipated in the next week.

“The normal minimum temperature is expected to be between 24-26 degrees Celsius, while the maximum will range from 33-35 degrees Celsius,” he said.

In the last 24 hours, Goa recorded a maximum of 33.5 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 25.3 degrees Celsius.

The State saw about 40 percent surplus seasonal rainfall from June to September. In the post-monsoon period beginning in October, Goa has registered over 104 percent excess rainfall.
