PANAJI
Criticised in the past for their unreliable forecast, weather predictions may now be more accurate with the use of Chinese-made Doppler radar with American software at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) station in Altinho-Panaji."The Doppler radar makes predictions of weather conditions by analysing an area of around 300 km to 500 km. Thunderstorms, cyclones and other calamities are accurately predicted using this technology,” said IMD scientist Rahul M.
In fact, the unseasonal rains and thunderstorms in the last few days had been accurately predicted by the IMD, thereby alerting people of inclement weather in advance.
The doppler radar was installed in 2010 but was not put to use over concerns raised by the defence ministry. The issue was later resolved in 2016.
According to details, many devices like analysis charts, models of forecasting and satellite cloud images were previously used, but the use of the doppler radar has helped the IMD greater accuracy in the weather forecast.
