It will be a week on Tuesday since the Margao Municipal Council adopted a resolution to go in for seven biomethanation plants to address the burning Sonsodo garbage issue.
Nothing, however, seems to have moved on the ground since the last seven days in this respect for reasons best known to the city fathers and the civic babus.
The file towards the tendering of the biomethanation plants has not moved in the corridors of the civic body. And, this may be partly connected to the ongoing cold war between Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Pooja Naik and Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar.
The reason is simple. The municipal administration has not created a file in respect of the biomethanation plants on the plea that the resolution adopted by the council a week ago is still not confirmed. Justifying this stand, the Chief Officer is believed to have maintained that the Chairperson had recently got the sopo tender scrapped on the plea that the resolution taken by the council was not confirmed.
By adopting the stand, the Chief Officer has pushed the ball in the court of the MMC chief to convene a meeting to specifically confirm the minutes of the decision taken at the special meeting held last week. It’s now clear that the file concerning the biomethanation plants will not move till the Chairperson calls for a meeting to confirm the minutes of the special meeting.
That’s not all. The resolution adopted at the meeting only speaks about installing seven biomethanation plants at Sonsodo. The MMC administration says it will take some time for the plants to take shape.
Officials in the know say the GWMC) as suggested construction of a shed admeasuring around 2000 square meters to house the biomethanation plants in phase I of the project.
“Construction of the shed, more so at the site of the old Komex shed, will take a long time. Moreover, while the councillors only spoke of the GeM portal to purchase the biomethanation plants, they have not taken into account the cost of the shed and other expenditure, which will cost the MMC in a big way,” sources said.
The MMC at its special meeting held on Tuesday last had given a stamp of approval for the seven plants.
