.. Welcomes VVPAT facility for 2017 election

Welcoming the Election Commission’s decision to introduce Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) in the Goa Assembly election scheduled in early 2017, former PWD Minister Churchill Alemao on Tuesday made a fervent plea to it to provide VVPAT devices to all the 1,640 polling stations instead of restricting the same to only 284 of these.

Churchill said that transparency in the election process will be ensured and rule out manipulations of any nature if VVPATs are provided to all the 1640 polling stations.
Addressing the media, the former PWD Minster said he had written to the Election Commission of India in August last with a plea to extend VVPAT to all the 1640 polling stations in Goa in the interest of transparency, but added that he has till date not received any reply from the EC. “I am happy over the EC’s decision to introduce VVPAT in the 2017 Goa Assembly election. When I had raised the issue of manipulation in the EVMs in the 2012 Assembly election and the 2014 Lok Sabha, many people had made fun of me. But my stand has been vindicated today with the Supreme Court directing the EC to introduce VVPAT in the elections,” he said.
