MAPUSA
A well collapsed in Mapusa while waterlogging problems have been reported from different areas due to incessant rains.
Several low-lying areas were inundated and roads saw puddles of water, throwing normal life out of gear.
Reports of water entering into some houses were also reported in Guirim as the continuous downpour led to rising water levels in low-lying areas in the village.
A well that was located near a residential house at Shetya-vaddo, Mapusa collapsed in the wee hours of Wednesday.
A two-wheeler parked by the side of the well also fell into it.
The collapsed well and a tree near the site is posing a threat to the residential house as it is located near the premises of the house.
Officials of the Mamlatdar office visited the site and inspected the area.
Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira and local councillor Tarak Arolkar also visited the place.
“The first priority is to save human lives and the house. I have spoken to the water resources department and the deputy collector. Action will be taken under the disaster management protocol,” Ferreira said.
The heavy rainfall also exposed the shoddy road digging work carried out during the laying of 33KV underground electricity cables in Mapusa.
A road that was dug up but not patched up near the Milagres church has sunk in and created deep features in the first rain.
The traffic along the road could get affected if authorities fail to take timely action and repair it.
“Despite requesting the incharge of the underground electrical work on several occasions, they have failed to take necessary action to repair the road. With the heavy rain, the road has collapsed and if no action is taken, the road may get washed away,” said Prakash Bhivshet, councillor of Ward 20 in Mapusa.
The road running parallel to the government complex was inundated on Tuesday late evening inconveniencing the movement of traffic in the area.
Several potholes along the stretch have further piled up the misery of the motorists, particularly the two-wheeler riders.
In Guirim, water made its way into the houses of some people as continuous rain led to the flooding of low-lying areas in the village.
The main road leading to the St Anthony-vaddo was also submerged.
