We’re only following notified govt rates, say taxi operators

Tourist taxi operators called on Tourism Minister Manohar “Babu” Azgaonkar at the secretariat on Monday in a bid to impress upon him that they are not at fault for being perceived as extortion agents when they are only following notified government rates.

Speaking to The Goan, leader of the taxi operators, Vinayak Nanoskar said that if the Tourism Department publicly displays the notified government rates for tourist taxis a lot of the misconceptions would subside.
“Just like the rates are displayed at the Goa Airport, the taxi rates need to be officially displayed outside hotels and other prominent tourist locations, then the tourists will know that we are only charging the official government rates,” Nanoskar told The Goan.
“But instead the government and the tourism department is pandering to those who want to bring outside operators in the state,” he said.
“In Delhi taxis may be cheap and the tourist will want the same rates here. But in Delhi beer is expensive!” Nanoskar said sarcastically.
He also took potshots at those tourists who “spend thousands of rupees by staying in five-star hotels but are unwilling to spend a few hundred rupees on a taxi.”
“These MLAs pledge by Gõykarponn but are pandering to the demands of the outsiders. We have warned them that those who have opposed the taxi operators including the like of (Dilip) Parulekar, (Dayanand) Mandrekar and (Kiran) Kandolkar in the North and Ganesh Gaonkar have lost the elections. They same fate will befall them,” Nanoskar warned.
