PERNEM
The locals of Mandrem have raised questions on the shelter against storm, rain, wind etc in the constituency lying unused so far, despite authorities offering it to the public to organise celebrations and other social events. The project was inaugurated in last year.
At the time of the inauguration, the CM had appealed to the public in Mandrem, to use the project for any social gathering or occasions like birthday parties, book launches or social events after taking permission from the local Panchayat office. But till date not even a single event has been organised here, and the building lies locked.
“If the building stays locked and unused for a long period of time, it may fall into desrepair. The trees planted in the vicinity are not watered regularly. There is no staff deployed to maintain the building. Without any upkeep or care, the building may get dilapidated within few years, making the crores of rupees spent to construct it, go to waste,” fear the locals.
Meanwhile, Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar had discussed about the issue and asked if half of the building could be used for an independent police station or fire control services.
The CM had given green signal for this proposal and said that a Department of Fire Services office would soon be opened here. However, this has not materialised yet.
