The Mahila Congress will try and stake claim, not for one but both the seats at stake for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Mahila Congress Vice-president Beena Naik said on Saturday.

When asked if the Mahila Congress will push for at least one ticket to be given to them, Naik said that there was no question about it, the Mahila Congress would push for both tickets to be given to women, if they are capable enough

of winning the seats for the party.

“Our team has been working aggressively, and it has put life into the Mahila Congress under the leadership of Adv Pratima Coutinho,” said Naik, while stating that it was but natural that the Congress party would take cognisance of this.

When asked about the fact that women were always left behind when it came to tickets because of the “winnability” factor, Naik said that while winnability had to be taken into consideration for the party’s good, there was no reason why women capable of winning should be left behind.

Naik was talking at a function where the Mahila Congress flag was unfurled for the first time at the Congress headquarters. September 15, 1984, is the day the Mahila Congress was founded. It was on this day that the Mahila Congress became a frontal organisation in the All India Congress Committee

(AICC), more than its earlier position as just a wing of the Congress.

Naik insisted that the Mahila Congress was working shoulder to shoulder with men, unlike other parties like the BJP, where, she pointed out, the Mahila branch was founded just three years ago.

The Mahila Congress also stressed on the fact that they were secular, and worked for the problems of everyone, be they women or men, irrespective of their socio-economic background.

Pointing to the 15-odd women gathered on the occasion, Naik said, “We don’t believe in discrimination as far as caste, creed and religion are concerned. All of us are united, and work towards solving the problems of people from different strata of society.”
