Stressing on promoting quality tourism in State, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday said his government will do all it can to provide good law and order and infrastructure for tourism industry to flourish in the State.
"We require quality tourism. The government will provide strong law and order, good roads...We will do everything to provide good infrastructure in the State," Parrikar said.
The chief minister was speaking at the inaugural of Le Meridien Goa, part of Marriott International resorts, in
Calangute.
Town and Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardessai, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, Calangute Sarpanch Anthony Menezes and former Panaji MLA Siddharth Kunolienkar were present among other dignitaries.
Speaking further, Parrikar said tourism has grown in leaps and bounds in the last two decades in the State.
"We never thought tourism would grow at this pace. In the last five years, it has almost tripled," he said.
Going down the memory lane, the chief minister said Goa was very safe in the 1970s where people could just latch their front door (without locking it) go to the market and come back home without fear that their house would be burgled.
"Now, the situation has changed. There is tremendous influx. Possibility of thefts has increased tremendously," he said.
Stating that he would like to bring the sense of
security of 1970s back in Goa, the chief minister said he has initiated some steps towards that goal.
"I want to get that (1970s) situation again in Goa. I have initiated some measures. Things will be visible after some time..." he said.
The five-starred resort, Le Meridien Goa is located in the heart of Calangute along the Calangue-Candolim road.
"Le Meridien Goa is set to be the preferred destination for connoisseurs of Goan culture, cuisine and music," said Norton Pereira, general manager of the resort.
The resort offers 146 exquisite rooms 10 of which are in the premium category.
Area Vice President-South Asia, Marriott International, Neeraj Govil, informed that 40 percent of the staff in Le Meridien Goa were from Goa. He further said 35 percent of the staff was women. Earlier, chairman of the resort, Peter Vaz, welcomed the guests.
