Will Goa Forward keep the post or concede it to BJP?

With Margao Municipal Council Vice-Chairperson Doris Texeira almost on her way out of office, the ongoing political developments in the civic body has triggered a debate whether the post, once vacant, will go to the BJP or will be retained by the Goa Forward party.

There appears no dearth of candidates from the BJP camp willing to take over the position once Doris quits the post, but the question that arises is whether Goa Forward party mentor and TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai will agree to concede the post to the BJP “ GFP’s alliance partner at the
State level.
Sources said that the TCP Minister will be hard pressed to take a call and concede the post to the BJP taking into account the social engineering in the civic body. Local observers wondered whether the TCP Minister will disturb the delicate arrangement in place in the civic body during the last one year and half wherein the posts of Chairperson
and Vice-Chairperson were held by members from both the majority and minority community.
Secondly, sources recalled the promise made by Goa Forward party supremo to the Scheduled Tribe community from Fatorda constituency on the eve of the Assembly election that one of the ST councillors would be soon elevated in the civic body, without announcing the post or position he intends to reward to the community.
In the present scheme of things, none of the councillors hailing from the ST community enjoy any position in the Margao civic body, though Fatorda Forward has in its ranks a senior councillor such as Tito Cardozo, a two-time councillor.
When The Goan contacted the TCP Minister to find out whether he has taken any decision on the successor as and when Doris moves out of office, he replied in the negative, asserting that the question of a successor will be decided at the right time.
Meanwhile, beleaguered MMC Vice-Chairperson Doris Texeira told The Goan that she would put in her papers the moment the TCP Minister ask her to do so. “I was made the MMC Vice-Chairperson by the TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat. I will step down from office no sooner I am asked by these leaders,” she said.
Doris has expressed confidence that there will not be any no-confidence motion against her, saying that Vijai has been her mentor and her relationship with him dates back many years.
