The coconuts, which has been procured from the agriculture farm, are available at a subsidized price of Rs 15 and Rs 20, around 50 per cent less than the market rate. A similar outlet has been opened up in the capital city.
He told the media after the inauguration that the government can support the hybrid variety of coconut to boost coconut production after examining the pros and cons.
‘The hybrid variety can also come in handy to tap toddy. Pure toddy is not available in the market and the tod
dy from the hybrid variety can be bottle and sold across the counters", he said.
Attributing the soaring coconut prices to the drought in Andhra Pradesh, Rayalseema region and parts of Tamil Nadu and areas in North Canara, the Agriculture Minister said he has asked his officers to start procuring coconuts from the big landlords directly and rule out the common man.
"Procuring directly from the bhatkars can help to reduce the price of coconuts till the situation stabilizes," he said.
The Agriculture Minister said that no stone will be left unturned to make coconuts everywhere in the state.
"The government is committed to ensure that the coconut cultivation is spread across the state," he said, adding that the
government's decision to make available the coconut at subsidized rates is an short term measure to bring down the soaring prices.
