MARGAO
The Colva police has detained a woman under section 302 of the IPC for murder in connection with the death of her daughter, aged two years and four months at their house at Betalbatim on Tuesday noon.
The girl was brought in dead to Hospicio Hospital, Margao on Tuesday noon after efforts by neighbours and others to revive the child went in vain.
Colva police station in-charge, PI Rahul Parab informed that the police detained the mother, Azia Avis Rodrigues on late Tuesday evening after her mother in law Sebastina Rodrigues, aged 65 years, a resident of Nagwaddo-Betalbatim lodged a complaint with the Colva police alleging that prior to 1 pm on Tuesday on the first floor of the house, the accused allegedly killed her minor daughter by smothering her as she was frustrated by her life.
“The Colva police has registered a case of murder against Azia Avis Rodrigues for the death of her daughter based on the complaint lodged by the mother-in-law,” PI Parab informed.
He said the police were in the process of completing the formalities of arrest of the accused after her detention.
PI Parab, who set in motion investigations to unearth the mystery behind the child’s death, first interrogated at length Azia and later the mother in law, Sebastina, who later lodged her complaint with the police alleging murder.
After recording the statement of Sebastina Rodrigues, a police team led by PI Parab went to the house at Betalbatim as part of the ongoing investigations in the case.
The police are conducting further investigations.
