A 68-year-old woman from Fakir Galli in Vasco was killed after she was struck by a car at Shantinagar on Friday afternoon.
The car sped away from the scene after the accident, but Vasco police managed to arrest the driver involved in the accident.
Residents and eyewitnesses said Raziya Mujawar was crossing the road at Shantinagar when she was hit by a speeding car.
“The car was a grey-coloured SUV and probably had come from the Sada side. The driver was driving in a rash and negligent manner and dashed against this lady. We heard a huge thud sound and thought that some vehicle tyre may have burst. But when we came to the road, we saw the lady lying in a pool of blood on the road. The car dragged the woman for about 50 meters and then sped away from the scene after the accident," said a resident Kashinath Yadav.
"We have seen a lot of accidents at this location and the government must take immediate steps to control the situation.”
Vasco Police Inspector Kapil Nayak said the police had managed to nab the accused in the hit-and-run fatal accident at Jairam nagar, Dabolim along with the vehicle after the accident was reported.
"We managed to nab the driver Amar Harmalkar (24) of Rumdawada-Sada who was driving the car in a rash and negligent manner while proceeding from Varunapuri to Dabolim side. The vehicle struck the pedestrian Raziya Mujawar (68) and fled the spot without informing the police nor giving medical aid to the injured woman.”
“The pedestrian was grievously injured due to the accident and was declared brought dead in the Chicalim Sub District Hospital. We have registered an accident case and arrested the accused under Sections 279, 304 (A) IPC and Section 134 (a) (b) of the MV Act. The body has been sent to Margao and the post-mortem will be carried out," said PI Nayak.
PSI Mayur Sawant is carrying out a further investigation under the supervision of PI Kapil Nayak and the guidance of Mormugao DySP Salim Shaikh.
