The Goa State Women’s Commission has recorded significant progress in addressing women’s issues, disposing of 579 cases between April 2023 and October 2025. This translates to an average of 19 cases resolved per month, underscoring the Commission’s commitment to expediting justice for women across the State.
During this period, the Commission heard a total of 1,194 cases, while also taking suo-moto cognizance in 14 matters.
Back in April 2023, when current Chairperson Ranjita Pai assumed office, 322 cases were pending.
Of these, 312 have since been resolved, with hearings continuing in the remaining 10.
As of today, 95 cases remain pending before the Commission, with a majority of complaints involving domestic violence, often filed against husbands and family members.
Other matters include sexual and psychological harassment, gender discrimination, and unfair treatment faced by women in various spheres.
Beyond adjudication, the Commission has intensified its outreach efforts. Over the past 20 months, it has conducted 80 workshops across colleges, self-help groups, and panchayats.
These sessions provide women with detailed information on their rights, domestic violence laws, cyber security, and gender equality. Health-related topics such as diet and nutrition are also covered.
In cases where complainants are unable to attend hearings due to health or personal reasons, the Commission has taken the unusual step of traveling to them.
So far, 38 such hearings have been conducted at the complainants’ locations, ensuring that justice is not delayed.
A source in the Commission said, Pai is also stressing on cyber awareness, noting that women and college students are being educated about online fraud and the precautions necessary while using social media.
“We want women to feel empowered not only in their homes and workplaces but also in the digital space,” the Commission source said.
Meanwhile, the Commission has announced a public hearing scheduled for November 29 in Zambaulim which will be organised in collaboration with the lawyers collective.
The event will provide guidance to women on legal and social issues, offering women a platform to voice concerns and seek support.
With its dual focus on case resolution and awareness-building, the Commission is endeavouring to play a pivotal role in safeguarding women’s rights and ensuring timely justice, the source added.
