Five years have passed and work on the extended 15 MLD water project at Chandel continues to move at snail’s pace, prompting panchayat members and locals to request the government to expedite the project.
Then PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar and Tourism Minister Babu Ajgaonkar had inaugurated work on the extended 15 MLD water project at Chandel five years ago, as the current water treatment plant is insufficient to meet the requirements of the entire Pernem taluka.
Several parts of the Mandrem constituency have been suffering from water shortage for the last 10 years, and aggrieved locals have frequently confronted water supply officials. The water shortage is then rectified for only a few days before the supply becomes erratic yet again.
Recently, Paliem sarpanch Uday Gawandi, Deputy sarpanch Ujwala Tilve and panch Sagar Tilve had discussed the matter in detail with water supply officials in Pernem.
"The village is suffering an acute scarcity of water for the last 5 years. The water department has failed to provide sufficient water supply regularly despite persistent requests," said Gawandi.
Former Minister Sangeeta Parab said the problem of insufficient water supply has been affecting people for many years now.
“The government should ensure water supply for at least six hours instead of providing free water which is erratic in supply,” said Parab.
The locals have demanded the early completion of the extended water project at Chandel and also want a new water plant at Tuem, to ensure a permanent solution to the water supply problems in the area.
