CANACONA
The PWD has begun work to erect a temporary footbridge across the river, just across the ongoing bridge construction work, which will connect the four-lane expressway.
It may be recalled that Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes had convened a meeting of officials of PWD (Highways) and Captain of Ports, after the residents had raised objections due to ongoing work of the bridge and expressway.
Fernandes had demanded a temporary footbridge across the river for people who found it difficult to use the present ferry service, as both sides of the river banks had become dangerous due to mud-filling activity.
After the Captain of Ports gave its approval, the PWD contractor began work to erect the footbridge, which will help people on both sides at Galgibaga-Poinguinim and Maxem-Loliem.
Residents on both sides had objected to PWD’s plans to construct a road by dumping mud close to the riverbanks on both sides and had demanded additional pillars and spans to avoid flooding of their residences.
Their concerns were raised by Fernandes and the PWD agreed to erect a f
ootbridge to minimize their inconvenience.
