Work on Margao wholesale fish market before elections: Mauvin

South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) chairman, Mauvin Godinho, has said that the SGPDA is examining a host of proposals for the development of the stinking wholesale fish market, assuring that a foundation stone for the market development will be laid before the assembly election.

Speaking after inaugurating a Sulabh toilet in the SGPDA market complex on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, Mauvin said the SGPDA is in receipt of proposals from the National Fisheries Board and GSUDA to develop the wholesale fish market. He, however, hastened to add that the PDA is in no haste to decide on the proposals and will take stakeholders as well as the people of Margao into confidence before taking any decision. “Madgavkars have supported our initiative for ‘Clean Margao Green Margao’, but there are some people who may simply put spanners in the development works. That’s the reason why the PDA is not acting in haste in deciding the market development proposals,” he said, while stating that the foundation stone for the wholesale fish market development will be laid before the 2017 assembly election.
Mauvin said the PDA mega market has begun to see a turnaround within the complex ever since the ‘Clean Margao Green Margao’ initiative of Rajendra Talak took up a host of proposals in the complex. He said the fish market will also see a turnaround once the vendors sit on the platforms after the BRICS summit. “We have decided to stop retail sale of fish in the wholesale fish market after October 15. The gates are ready at the wholesale fish market and the entrance to the market will be closed by 9 am. This will solve the long standing demanding of the retail fish vendors at the PDA retail market,” he said, adding that the changes will take place after the BRICS summit since the administration does not want any untoward incident to take place during the summit.
