Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida on Tuesday said works on the long-pending Vasco fish market would begin by the month end, adding that the market project taken up through GSUDA would be completed within a year.

"The money has been transferred to GSUDA for the three key projects of Vasco fish market, Baina Power House and renovation of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) building. We also convened a meeting with the vendors and the Dy Collector regarding the fish market,” Almeida told reporters.

“The vendors had one main issue and complained that many people had begun selling fish by the roadside, causing them losses. We have now given strict instructions to the MMC chief officer and the police to stop people selling fish outside the fish market.”

“The new fish market project will begin by the month end and will be completed within a year," said Almeida.

When contacted, MMC Chairperson Nandadeep Raut said development had begun in Vasco, with the start of the Vasco fish market.

"Responding to concerns of fish vendors, we have now begun a drive to take strict action against anyone selling fish outside the market. The fish vendors have finally agreed to go ahead with the new fish market and we have also agreed to their requirements.”

“Credit to resolve this pending issue must be given to Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida who brought different groups among vendors together and worked out a solution.”

“As of now, we are having an inspection along with the technical team and ME to identify a location to temporarily shift the fish vendors, when work begins on the new Vasco Fish market," said Raut.
