World Organ Day observed
PANAJI: On the occasion of ‘World Organ Day’ Manipal Hospital Goa and Rotary Eye Bank jointly created awareness on the importance of organ donation. The theme was - 'Life shared is life lived.' Dr Shekhar Salkar, HOD oncology, Vijay Priyolkar, president Rotary Eye Bank and Dr Amol Mahaldar consultant nephrologist and transplant physician were present.
Dr Salkar said, “Organ donation in the West is fairly an accepted phenomenon. People who cannot be treated with conventional methods generally undergo organ transplant as the last option. Due to shortage of organ donors in India patients succumb to disorders as they do not receive organs in time.”
In order to encourage, educate and inform the people, family members of people who donated their eyes to the rotary eye bank were felicitated and appreciated for their noble gesture. Staff of Manipal Hospitals pledged to donate their eyes.
Priyolkar said, "While the rate of eye donations has picked up, the myths associated with eye donation is still holding back many from contributing to the cause.”
MH Goa is all set to start the cadaver programme in the State especially the Tissue Crossmatch lab.
