Worms in tap water: No fault found in Dabos supply system Water Supply Department personnel carrying out chlorination and flushing of water pipelines at various locations across Sattari taluka as a precautionary measure following reports of worm-like organisms in drinking water.

The discovery of worm-like organisms in drinking water on three occasions over the past two months in Sattari has caused concern among people in the taluka.
Executive Engineer Rashmi Shirodkar has, however, allayed fears and said the Dabos Water Treatment Plant continues to remain safe, adding that organisms did not originate from water supplied by the treatment plant and may have entered the water through local or external factors associated with the distribution network.
Shirodkar has assured citizens that there is no reason for panic.
“No fault has been detected on the part of the water supply department in any of the three incidents. Water at the Dabos Water Treatment Plant undergoes treatment strictly according to prescribed standards. It is then supplied through pipelines under regular monitoring and inspection. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that such organisms originated from the treatment plant itself.”
Officials have reiterated that water supplied from the Dabos Water Treatment Plant is subject to regular quality monitoring and that there is currently no threat to public health.
At the same time, residents have been advised to maintain proper hygiene and upkeep of their own water storage systems.
Water samples tested
After the incidents were reported, the department collected water samples from various locations and conducted laboratory testing. The tests revealed no bacterial or chemical contamination in the water.
According to Shirodkar, if there had been a widespread infestation of worm-like organisms within the main distribution system, it would have been reflected in the laboratory findings. “Since no such evidence was detected, the possibility of the organisms originating from the primary water supply network is extremely low,” said Shirodkar.
Chlorination, flushing of pipelines
Following these incidents, the department launched an immediate inspection drive and thoroughly examined the water distribution system.
As a precautionary measure, several pipelines connected to the Dabos project were chlorinated and flushed. This process helps eliminate any accumulated organic matter or potential contaminants within the distribution system.
Officials also informed that additional monitoring measures have been put in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Maintaining household water tanks
Authorities believe that poor maintenance of household water storage tanks could also be a contributing factor. In many cases, sacks, waste materials, or damp objects are stored near water tanks. During the monsoon season, such conditions can encourage the growth of worm-like organisms.
If tank lids are not properly sealed or ventilation openings are left uncovered, these organisms may find their way into the tanks. Accumulated sludge, algae, and infrequent cleaning can also contribute to such problems.
The department has, therefore, urged residents to clean their water storage tanks at least once every three to four months, ensure that lids are properly secured, and maintain cleanliness around storage facilities.
