An open-type bandhara at Kuskond-Nuvem, built at a cost of Rs 93.84 lakh, is expected to benefit local farmers growing pulses and vegetables in their fields during the rabi season.

The bandhara was inaugurated by Water Resources Department Minister Vinoda Paliencar in the presence of Nuvem MLA Wilfred D’Sa on Saturday.

WRD officials said the bandhara will also help in recharging the surrounding ground water sources like wells, lakes, tanks etc, besides being a source of drinking water for cattle and birds.

Promising all-out help and assistance to Nuvem MLA Wilfred D’Sa for construction of bandharas and desilting of ponds and lakes, the WRD Minister said the government does not discriminate in development on the basis of ruling and opposition parties. “Since the Nuvem MLA approached me with a host of works, the WRD has taken up development works in the constituency without any discrimination. This government’s agenda is only development and without any discrimination,” he added.

In his address, the Nuvem MLA thanked the WRD Minister for sanctioning works in his constituency to the tune of Rs 6-7 crore, with some of these having already taken shape. “This bandhara at Nuvem will benefit farmers, who used to construct and close the bandhara with coconut logs, mud etc by incurring heavy expenditure every year. The stored water was not sufficient for crops cultivation as most of the water used to percolate through the bundh, leaving the farmers with acute water shortage during rabi season,” Wilfred added.
