Stating that plans were afoot to expand the garbage treatment plant at Sada-Vasco, Director of Municipal administration (DMA) Dr Tariq Thomas appealed to the people to cooperate with MMC by offering segregated garbage.
Dr Thomas was speaking to reporters after visiting the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Saturday and reviewing various projects in Vasco town.
“My visit to Vasco was to check for any requirements and support that DMA could offer to the MMC. I will also have a look at various projects being planned and discuss with councillors about any major issues.”
“There have been plans to expand the garbage treatment plant and people should cooperate with the MMC and offer segregated garbage,” said Dr Thomas.
Stating that his visit to Vasco was part of efforts to cover every municipality on weekends, Dr Thomas said his main aim was to review the functioning of MMC and to check for proposals pending before the DMA.
“Many issues are pending before the DMA and such meetings help us move ahead with major proposals.”
“We are pushing ahead with garbage segregation and we will ask bulk waste generators to set up a composting unit. We are having a rate system for them and we will tell them to put a bio-digester.”
“We are also trying to expand garbage treatment from the present 5 tonnes per day to 30 tonnes per day at Sada. We have also requested councillors to go to their wards and appeal to people to ensure that waste is
segregated and people are voluntarily engaged,” said Dr Thomas.
The DMA informed that the government has been providing municipalities with funds for development works and added that municipal councils also have to generate their own funds.
“People must understand that the cost to treat garbage is huge but what they are paying is minimal. Not that the common should be burdened, but the public must also be responsible. It is not only the responsibility of the MMC and councillors.”
“We have many things to do from our end, but some things are not possible without public support,” said Dr Thomas.
Key issues were discussed with DMA, says Ex-MMC chairperson Gaonkar
VASCO: Former Mormugao Municipal Council chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar said key issues had been discussed with Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) Dr Tariq Thomas during his meeting with the councillors on Saturday.
“All councillors were present at the meeting and we discussed major issues like garbage, labour shortage and lease of shops. We also discussed assessment of houses.”
“We also had an inspection of the garbage treatment plant and visited other areas where new development works were proposed,” said Gaonkar.
MMC councillor Fredrick Henriques said the meeting was fruitful as DMA has assured to come up with solutions to major issues confronting the MMC.
“This meeting was long pending and we are grateful to the DMA for coming. We have a major issue of garbage and besides this there is also an issue of many houses illegally built on Comunidade or government land which have not been assessed as yet,” said Henriques.
