The Water Resources Department (WRD) has decided to construct a Rs 7.11 crore protection wall and a drain in Poraskadem, to prevent monsoon water from flowing from the Mopa airport to several houses and fields in the village below the Mopa plateau.
WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar launched the work on this project in the presence of Pernem MLA Pravin Arlekar and other officials.
Shirodkar said the protection wall and drain will be constructed over a distance of 1.5 kms and will be completed by June 15.
“Once this project is completed, water from the Mopa airport plateau will no longer cause hardships to houses in Khajne-Amere-Poraskadem,” assured Shirodkar.
The minister said Arlekar had informed him that houses located below the Mopa plateau would get flooded with monsoon water flowing from the airport area since the last two years.
“The government has taken concrete steps to ensure that houses, temples and fields will not be affected with the flow of monsoon water from the plateau,” said Shirodkar.
Others present on the occasion included Khazne-Amere-Poraskadem Sarpanch Preeti Haldankar, Dy Sarpanch Siddhi Gadekar, Varkhand-Nagzar Sarpanch Mayuri Tulsakar, Tambosem-Mopa-Ugvem Sarpanch Subodh Mahale, panchas and government officials.
Pernem MLA Praveen Arlekar said rainwater from the Mopa plateau had been flowing from three places, causing huge losses to homes and fields which would get flooded.
Former sarpanch and sitting panch Nisha Haldankar said people have had to suffer for the past two years.
“Efforts made to resolve the issue during these two years were only temporary. We then appealed to our MLA for a permanent solution by constructing a protection wall and a drain.
