Young cop killed in road mishap

MAPUSA

One cop died and a woman was seriously injured in a road accident along the NH17 in Mapusa on Sunday night.

According to Mapusa Police, Constable Ritam Kanolkar (21), a resident of Dhargal and attached to Porvorim Police station, died in the road mishap at Tar junction, near Laxmi Saw Mill, Mapusa while Farana Sonnur was seriously injured.

At the time of accident, the deceased cop was riding a Hero Honda motorcycle (GA-03-F-9334) and was not wearing a helmet.

Police were still trying to piece the accident details together at the time of going to the press, but an eyewitness told The Goan that an unidentified vehicle hit the cop’s bike and sped away. The bike was dragged at least by 20 metres from the site of the accident and was lying on the middle of the road. There was a pool of blood around the bike, the eyewitness said.

Both were shifted to the North Goa District Hospital where the deceased was declared dead. The woman suffered a fracture on the leg and was in serious condition, police said.

PERNEM Pernem Police on Sunday arrested a Russian tourist on charges of assaulting another foreign tourist at Arambol.
