As the murder of the young Muktar Badni triggered outrage amongst the inhabitants of Azad Nagar, former Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar led a group of people to the Margao police station demanding justice for the family of the deceased and stern punishment for the accused.
As tension rent the air, the entrance to the district police headquarters was shut and the protesters led by Ajgaonkar were stopped from entering the headquarters.
At one stage, Ajgaonkar threatened to get the body of the deceased at the police station if the Margao police fail to conduct impartial investigations into the murder of Muktar.
Claiming that the accused persons enjoyed political patronage from the powers that be over the years, Ajgaonkar demanded that the police conduct impartial investigations and ensure the accused persons get the punishment.
A delegation led by Ajgaonkar later called on DySP Shivendu Bhushan and PI Filomena Costa and demanded thorough investigations into the case. “The accused persons should deserve stern punishment as per the law. We will not tolerate if the accused are left scot free due to political interference,” he warned.
Questioning the police for heavy police deployment at Azad Nagar to protect the house of the accused, Ajgaonkar wondered whether the police are protecting the accused person instead of meting out justice to the family of the deceased.
Ajgaonkar pointed out that the main accused is putting up at the Azad Nagar locality illegally since he and his family were never allotted the houses under the rehabilitation plan. “The police and the Konkan Railway should ensure that the accused and his family are evicted from the locality, failing which the people will take the law into their hands,” he warned.
After the police top brass explained the delegation that all the five accused persons allegedly involved in the murder are behind bars and have been charged for murder, the delegation and the crowd dispersed from the police station.
